Street market

The products of exclusive brands are manufactured in sweatshops in countries of the so-called "Third World". The fact that the allegedly exclusive goods can be purchased cheaply in the streets of these same countries turns the system upside down, as it were. The artist Sharmila Samant, by marking pieces of clothing she has selected as artworks (not as international designer products) and selling them in exhibitions, intends to question the market-economy system of monopoly and copyright.

Sharmila Samant was born in Bombay in 1967 where she undertook her art education. She currently lives and works in Mumbai where she is active on the arts scene as a founder of the Open Circle artists initiative.
